“Innovation” is the heart of driving the country's economic and social system to become “Thailand 4.0”. Previously, “Thailand Innovation System” has continuously grown in economic, social, environment, technology and infrastructure. However, there are still many challenges to drive the country forward with innovation such as manpower development, area-based development, and competitiveness development.
'innovation - A New Landscape of Thailand' With the advent of the Thailand 4.0 Policy, innovation now plays a major role as a driving force behind the kingdom's economic and social development. This policy not only creates value-added to Thai exports but also promotes the personified reputation of Thailand as an 'innovative craftsman' to the rest of the world. It also communicates the value and benefits of Thai innovations to global citizens with the 'Innovate Thailand' branding. This catchphrase is working to familiarize the international community with the country's new image as it transitions from a tradition-based economy to an innovation-based economy.
Innovation has long been recognized as a driving engine for economic growth. After the global financial crisis, Thailand has turned the attention to the innovation-driven growth strategy, instead of the export-oriented growth strategy, and recently became an upper middle-income economy. According to the Tenth National Economic and Social Development Plan, covering the period of 2007-2011, the strategy was deployed nation-wide with the focus on economic development and competitiveness. Since adopting this strategy, the concept of innovation has evolved and been broadly adopted as a means of sustainable development.
